Assessment Strategies Coding Form: Recording Student Responses

A coding form used to record target student interactions. This form is under development and Action Research is planned to validate its use. Please access the Assessment section of the Oral Language Development site to learn more about its use and to join in on the Action Research.

Brainstorm: "Do you remember the problem in the story?"

A preschool teacher and her students re-read the story "Bear Snores On," identifying key elements of the story and making connections to knowledge about hibernation.

Brainstorm: "Do you remember what it means to be 'a poor sport?'"

Viviana and four first grade students identify examples of ways to lose friends, making connections to the readaloud.

Brainstorm: "What kind of prints do you make?"

A preschool teacher and her students generate ideas about the different kinds of prints or tracks that might be left in the snow.

Brainstorm: "Which animals hibernate?"

A preschool teacher and her students add their new knowledge about hibernating animals to a class chart.

Brainstorm:"What do you notice about their faces?"

Viviana and her first grade students make predictions about a book based on the cover illustrations.

Brainstorming: "Imagination caps: how silly can we make this?"

A preschool teacher and her students brainstorm alternate words and insert them into a poem to make it as "silly" as possible.

Brainstorming: "Take a look at your sphere and describe it."

Jenna and five kindergarten students explore and describe math manipulatives of geometric shapes.

Brainstorming: "What makes a triangle a triangle?"

Jenna and five kindergarten students identify the characteristics of a triangle.

Brainstorming: "Where could we get a snake?"

A preschool teacher and her students engage in conversation using different prompts related to the week's theme.
