The International Summit on the Teaching Profession

Around the world there is a growing recognition that induction and ongoing professional development are essential to improve student learning. This was evident in remarks I heard and conversations I had at the International Summit on the Teaching Profession in New York City, where Secretary Duncan brought together the Ministers of Education and union leaders from 15 other countries to talk about how to create a well-prepared and accountable teaching profession.

I encourage you to read a Washington Post article about the Summit written by Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford University, that summarizes the event and highlights strategies being used in Finland, Singapore and China to build and reward a highly qualified teaching force and address inequity in schools. We welcome you to share your comment about this article.
