I liked the Principal's supportive statements and the professional, but warm, collaboration the mentors engendered.
Some key factors for the success of these 2 featured programs:
- Support at the administrative level.
- Setting clear objectives. Interesting that this was reciprocal on the part of both the mentors and the mentees. Might be interesting to discuss how the mentors created an environment which invited the mentees to give them objectives for the observations and indeed the mentorship relationship as a whole.
One thought this video also provoked in me - how can we do a better job of evolving mentoring programs so that they benefit more experienced teachers (perhaps 5 year veterans, etc), not just first/second year teachers?
I enjoy seeing and hearing about programs like this. As a teacher it is great to feel supported and not criticized. Knowing that there is someone you can talk to or ask for help is something that is needed when you are a new teacher.
My only thought is making sure the mentors have enough experience, not just two to three years but minimum 5.
